Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical biological terror, but inside Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the country for her career. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the idea of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.
