Conservative reactions to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration representatives defended the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and image are visible in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions raise significant questions about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally Behind the Release
However, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But some are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, enabled certain conservative figures to launch the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no criminal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these files for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Muted
Nonetheless, broader discourse on the political right was relatively muted following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that came before the congressional approval to pass a bill requiring the documents' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were given physical binders of materials that included little new data.
