'Treat game'
The legal representative, handling the case, outlined Ruben's offending to the court.
She stated his targets were under-privileged children who were staying at a youth camp which he operated.
The man played a "treat game" with the youngsters, the legal counsel stated, in which he would access the sleeping quarters when they were getting ready for bed and tell them to ingest treats "as quickly as they can".
She told the court the defendant had conducted this practice with the boys "repeatedly", and minors had previously become sick the subsequent day.
She stated Ruben had been capable of justifying this over a long period as the children being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepson had suspicions in July 2025.
Mrs Prior KC added: "This year his family member had worries about the situation, with valid cause.
"They decided to have a look in the defendant's belongings."
The legal counsel explained materials including baby oil, ointment and medical needles were located, and his stepchild contacted the law enforcement about his worries.
She said the man proceeded to play the "candy game" with six children that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the following morning.
"Law enforcement" had not gone out by that stage," she continued.
The oversight body, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was examining the police response of the situation.
The legal representative explained the youngsters were struggling to walk due to being ill, so the family member contacted the police a second time.
She explained the man then engaged in the "sweet game" in a space of five minors.
