The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
